Choosing a tooth replacement treatment after tooth loss is one of the most important decisions that you’ll make for your smile. As a dental patient today, you have more restorative treatment options than ever before, including state-of-the-art dental implants. Keep reading to learn more about dental implants from our Troy dentists.

Q: What does it mean that dental implants are “permanent?”

A: We refer to dental implants as “permanent” replacement teeth, because once our dentist has inserted an implant into your smile, it is not removable. Every dental implant actually has a titanium root that holds the visible part of the restoration in place. This root extends all the way into the patient’s jawbone tissue. So, once your dental implant is complete you live with it permanently.

Q: What is it like to live with a dental implant day to day?
A: For the most part you will find that your dental implant fits into your life conveniently, and is quite intuitive to care for. Once your dental implant is in place, you will be able to eat your favorite foods and drink your favorite drinks. Your implant will be personalized to fit you, so it will aesthetically blend with your existing smile. And, you’ll be able to care for your implant by brushing, flossing, and keeping up with your semi-annual professional dental cleanings, just as you do now!

Q: How long does the dental implant treatment process take?
A: This depends on what kind of dental implants, specifically, you choose. A conventional, full-sized implant take a few months to complete, because your jawbone tissue needs to heal after we insert the full-sized titanium root. A mini dental implant, on the other hand, does not require post-insertion healing time so these are completed in just two or three appointments.
