Troy Cosmetic Dentist Explains Ways We Use Porcelain Veneers

Written by Dr. Bentley on Jun 23, 2015

In the not too distant past, veneers were thought to be a cosmetic treatment available only to movie stars and the rich and famous. But advances in dental technology have made treatment with porcelain veneers at our Troy Cosmetic Dentist office more accessible than ever.

Uses for Porcelain Veneers

Veneers are very thin porcelain shells that offer the same translucency, color, shade and texture of natural teeth. Porcelain veneers are bonded permanently to the front surface of your tooth.

The application of porcelain veneers is sometimes referred to as ‘instant orthodontics’ because they can provide the much-sought-after after ‘perfect smile’ in just a couple of sittings, as opposed to an average treatment time of several months to years for traditional orthodontics.

Among their other applications, our dentist can use porcelain veneers to disguise teeth that are worn down, chipped or broken, misaligned, uneven, or irregularly shaped. Porcelain veneers may also be used fix a single broken or chipped tooth, or to just tweak your smile to make it Hollywood perfect.

Efficient, Convenient Treatment

Another benefit of porcelain veneers is that they can be created and placed in just two or three visits. Your first visit to the Troy Cosmetic Dentist office will begin with a consultation to discuss the shape, size, and color of your desired smile. We will take impressions of your teeth, and remove a small bit of enamel from the tooth surface so that the veneer will fit your teeth perfectly.

When the veneers have been created, your dentist will make final adjustments to the veneer and to your teeth as necessary. The porcelain veneer will then be bonded to the surface of your tooth. It may be necessary to return for a follow-up visit so your dentist to confirm proper placement and ensure that your gums are adapting to the veneers.

Porcelain veneers are considered to be permanent; they usually will not last a lifetime and will eventually need to be replaced. But with proper oral hygiene and routine visits to your dentist, porcelain veneers can last as long as 15 years.
