A Teeth Whitening Success Story

Even the Worst Stains Can Be Eliminated

Like many people, Amy tried to maintain a sparkling smile by brushing and flossing regularly, but there something was working against her struggle for the perfect smile. Amy was a heavy smoker and drank at least 3 cups of coffee a day. Even though she was brushing regularly, her teeth had become severely stained because of her coffee and tobacco habits by the time she was 32. After quitting smoking and significantly reducing her coffee intake, she still wasn’t seeing any improvement in the brightness of her smile.

Amy’s Treatment

When Amy came in seeking a professional solution to her discolored smile, I suggested we start with an in-office, professional teeth whitening treatment. Teeth whitening or “bleaching” involves the use of a bleaching agent to oxidize stains in the tooth enamel and dentin. The fastest and most effective whitening treatment uses a highly concentrated (40%) hydrogen peroxide solution. A dentist must perform this treatment in the office because the high concentration of hydrogen peroxide can irritate or damage your gums and tissue if applied incorrectly. The treatment process usually lasts no more than an hour.

After examining Amy’s current tooth shade, and explaining the details of the procedure to her, we proceeded with the treatment. In just one hour, she witnessed phenomenal results; 32 years of stains and discoloration were lifted away! Although the initial effects of teeth whitening can be observed immediately, it may take up to 2 weeks for the full results to show. After two weeks Amy returned with a dazzling smile to thank us for our work.

Can I Experience Similar Results?

Anyone who is dissatisfied with the color of their teeth is a good candidate for teeth whitening. You should have generally healthy teeth and gums to undergo the treatment. Like Amy, you will most likely experience moderate to substantial results, improving your smile by several shades. If you have restorations such as veneers, crowns, or bondings, you will most likely need to have them redone after teeth whitening as they will not be affected by the treatment and will no longer match your natural teeth.

It is usually recommended that an in-office whitening treatment is followed by a few weeks of take-home whitening kits. Next week we’ll explain the benefits of at-home whitening kits and explore the different types of at-home kits available.
